In order to give the village of Urleben and its regional neighborhood from networked neighboring villages an attractive perspective, the GUTLANDLEBEN concept is based on three different levels.
An action plan is being developed for the entire village, which in the first level gradually includes maintenance, the renovation and dismantling of vacancies and the creation of new building plots within the village. On the second level, the focus is on the advertised area in the northern part of the village, which is being realigned through the strategic transformation of the central, vacant farm. On the third level, a “new center” is being created around a communal courtyard. The building ensemble, which is gradually growing, specifically promotes the interplay of living – working – public services. With the focus on the care and supply of the youngest and oldest and affordable housing, the social exchange and interaction is stimulated. The idea of the inner, public space and the more private, structurally condensed edge of re-use existing houses for young (also moving) families is complemented by a „green ring“ in between for subsistence agriculture, food production and landscaped recreational areas. With the successive dismantling of the large, empty barn buildings inside the block, the green ring grows as the quarter changes. The surrounding landscape extends into the quarter and becomes part of the transformation process. The relationship between built-up area and landscape area is negotiated continuously.
