Siemensstadt 2.0 creates the conditions for the development of a future-oriented, resilient and productive city that has the potential to pioneer smart and innovative cities. Research, development and production are combined with education, communication and event spaces as well as socially relevant public institutions, culture and living to constitute an integrative city model. The value chain from basic research, applied research, industry-related research and development to production is consistently completed by education, public functions, event spaces and living areas that contribute to a lively district. As an independent location, Siemensstadt 2.0 qualifies the surrounding quarters to create identity: the open, mixed-use and productive urban quarter of tomorrow as a living urban laboratory. The concept is based upon a transformation process that is characterized by innovation and flexibility. Linked to the existing urban context with its existing listed buildings as well as huge production related industrial structures, an urban framework is developed that can gradually grow and simultaneously allows for a high degree of flexibility in the planning processes. In this way, an urban network of interconnected neighborhoods can emerge that generates a dynamic framework for social relationships and supply infrastructure. The Siemensstadt 2.0 city laboratory consists of hybrid buildings in hybrid neighborhoods. All quarters provide a multifunctional programming that allow for individual expression and special features on a building level.
The future-oriented urban planning concept for the district is based on a holistic sustainability concept, which addresses aspects of ecology, economy and social qualities and integrates these issues in an innovative way.
